Open Fire

I saw you today
tossing love letters into an open fire
letting our memories burn and twist
in the somber setting
of a silent flame
I know that you're hurting love
I know that what I've done is wrong
and that tears can't extinguish
this kind of roaring flame
But don't let it be over
don't let our love disappear
too much blood and ink
have been spilled
to just turn it all to smoke
rising out of an open fire
If I meant anything to you
and if our love has to be a memory
please bury it under lock and key
and don't let it spread in the winds
that cut through this autumn air
I know that you owe me nothing
especially not my dignity or my respect
but I'd like to be remembered my love
even if only in spite
I want my words to have more meaning
than just a column of wind-whipped smoke
and I want our memories to last longer
than a small box of hand-written letters
tossed into the heart
of a roaring open fire

  15. Karoly Delacroix says:

I love all your poetry, but this one… is a world of its own. Your writing is vivid, beautiful and skilled. It touches the heart and something inside the reader that they can identify and love/admire it all the more. This one actually made me cry, even though justa few tears but hold it closer- I went through almost the same thing with my ex, felt the same way you described in the poem. A hollow ache and helpless desperation as you watch years of struggle and caring turn to ash and mist away… But the pain makes us human, let's us know we're alive, non? I look forward to reading more of your poetry, and feeling.

These poems are really awesome and heartfelt. If I need to get in touch with some feelings, I read these poems. "Open Fire" reminds me of this guy I like that is acting like he likes me but sometimes it seems he is just playing me.

wow i think that poem hits home to alot of people. I also think that having to burn love letters is no way to cope with the inner pain you might be having. Hey know i've done it once or twice!!!
