FAQs

Here is a list of just a few of the most common questions I get asked. I'm going to expand this as I get asked more questions and as the site changes. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to E-mail them to me at raven@ravensrants.com

How can I submit my poetry to your site?

Raven's Rants is a personal home page, all of the material on this site is of my own origin and thus I don't accept outside submissions. There are many great sites on the Internet for submitting your works, my advice is to do a search for "Submit your poetry" or something to the like and seeing what you come up with.

Can I use some of your poems on my own site?

If you ask first, I will usually give permission. If you don't, I won't. So if you want to use a few of my poems for your own site, write me at raven@ravensrants.com I probably will allow you. Do include a link to your site if it's up and I will also ask you to include a link back to Raven's Rants, but it's not necessary.

Can I send you a few poems for you to comment on?

I wish you could. But it's a sign of our litigious society today that I can't let you. If I allowed people to send me poetry to comment on and I wound up writing a similar poem without realizing it, I could be sued and would probably lose even if it was completely accidental. It's the nature of the courts today and I'm sorry it has to be this way.

I'd like to get to know you better, how can I do that?

If you want to know more about me than I provide on the site, you are welcome to E-mail me and ask whatever questions are on your mind. While I do well at answering specific questions, asking me things like "Who are you?" will probably get you nowhere. If you have questions, please ask! But don't expect me to lay it all out for you.

Also, please note that I am happily engaged to a wonderful lady and am thoroughly unavailable. I love meeting new people on the Internet and making new friends, but I am not seeking a relationship. I just feel the need to nip that in the bud.

Why don't you use your real name?

If you're smart about the Internet, you can get my real name, so it's not a big secret. However, I currently enjoy my privacy a lot and I don't want to parade that information around the site. I'm considering using it in the future and the time will probably come soon in which it will be in my best interest to "come out" so to speak. But until then, I hope you'll understand my decision.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

All of my poems, with a few exceptions, are written from my personal life. I always felt that poetry should be intimate and personal and I've written with that philosophy in mind. It's important to note that every poem I write, I write for myself first and worry about the site later, I use it as a release of my own emotions, not to impress others.

Why do you call this gothic poetry, it doesn't seem very gothic to me?

The gothic genre is very broad and there are many different ideas as to what's gothic and what's not as there are people on this planet. I typically write heavier, sadder and more dark poetry. But that doesn't stop me from writing love poetry and lots of it, however, even those are laced with a more serious, heavy tone.

Whether or not it's truly gothic is up to the reader. But it's the closest definition I could draw. I dislike my poetry being characterized and the gothic genre I suppose was the one I hated it being included in the least. So I leave it open to your interpretation as to what kind of poetry it really is…

What software do you use to run the site?

Raven's Rants is run off of entirely free and GPL software. For more information about this and specific programs uses, please refer to the GPL-Based Project Announcement page.
